Paleomagnetism and magnetic fabric: "attractive" tools to understand geological processes
abstract

Paleomagnetism is the study of the record of the Earth's magnetic field in volcanic, sedimentary rocks and archeological materials. Magnetic minerals in rocks lock-in a record of the direction and intensity of the magnetic field when they form. This record provides information on the past behavior of Earth's magnetic field and the past location of tectonic plates. The record of geomagnetic reversals and paleosecular variation (PSV) of the Earth's magnetic field, preserved in rock sequences, provides a time-scale that is used as a valid geochronologic tool.
The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) is another paleomagnetic tool, recognized as a highly sensitive indicator of mineral fabric of rocks. AMS applications have been made to sedimentology, igneous processes, and structural geology. AMS is in fact a very useful method to infer flow directions of volcanic bodies and a reliable proxy to reconstruct deformation history of sedimentary rocks.
In this seminar, some applications on the use of paleomagnetism and AMS will be presented in both volcanic and sedimentary settings.
