Programme Overview

The Master's Degree Programme in Geology for Energy Resources aims to provide advanced academic, scientific, and professional training focused on the exploration, development, utilization, and sustainable management of subsurface resources. Particular emphasis is placed on renewable and fossil energy resources as well as on the exploration and modelling of geological structures suitable for energy production and storage.

Building upon a solid foundation in Earth Sciences, the programme equips students with the scientific knowledge, professional skills, and critical thinking abilities required to enter the energy exploration and production industry. The curriculum combines theoretical education with practical experience through fieldwork and laboratory activities.

The programme is designed to educate highly qualified professionals with specialist expertise in the sustainable management of georesources, capable of developing innovative strategies for their responsible use, addressing complex environmental and geological challenges, and responding effectively to global changes affecting the Earth system.

The programme is delivered entirely in English.

Admission Requirements and Enrolment Procedures

Admission to the Master's Degree Programme in Geology for Energy Resources is not subject to a limited number of places. Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent university qualification. Degrees awarded by foreign institutions are evaluated by a dedicated committee appointed by the Coordination Committee of the Geology Degree Programmes, in accordance with current legislation and international agreements.

Applicants are expected to possess a solid background in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, together with adequate knowledge of the various disciplines within the geological sciences.

In general, admission requirements are fulfilled by students holding a Bachelor's Degree in Geological Sciences (Italian L-34 or 16 ex D.M. 509/1999, or an equivalent foreign qualification).

Applicants holding different Bachelor's or Master's degrees will be assessed by the appointed committee. Through the evaluation of the academic curriculum and, where necessary, an interview, the committee may require additional credits in geological disciplines before granting admission clearance. Such requirements must be fulfilled in order to obtain authorization for enrolment (deadline at UniPg is generally end of February).

Since this international MSc programme is taught entirely in English, students are required to demonstrate English language proficiency at B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Applications from international students requiring an entry visa must be submitted exclusively through the Universitaly platform (more details on the procedure here).

For applicants who do not require a visa and do not hold an official B2 English language certificate, the appointed committee may assess the candidate's language competence through an interview or by evaluating alternative certifications demonstrating an equivalent level of proficiency.

Enrolment is subject to the positive evaluation of the applicant's academic background by the Programme Committee.

For the admission clearance request (Nulla Osta), applicants must complete and submit the form including all info (email to: segr-didattica.fisgeo@unipg.it)

Career Opportunities

Graduates in Geology for Energy Resources are primarily qualified for careers in the energy exploration sector, working for major national and international energy companies, public and private institutions, consulting firms, and as independent professionals.

The degree also provides access, after successfully passing the Italian State Examination for professional qualification, to registration in Section A of the Professional Register of Geologists.

Furthermore, the MSc degree provides an excellent foundation for PhD programmes and scientific research careers at universities and public or private research institutions. Graduates may also pursue additional qualifications required for teaching specific scientific subjects in secondary education.

Enrollment for the Degree Program is open starting from August 1st at the University's enrollment offices, both in Perugia and Terni, as well as online through the Enrollment section:
