Inelastic (Raman and Brillouin) light scattering is an effective experimental technique for the study of the vibrational dynamics of metallic, semiconductor or dielectric nano and submicron particles. In the continuum approach we developed for the calculation of the acousto-optic interaction in confined systems, both mode frequencies and scattering intensities are related to the sound velocities and size of the particles, opening new possibilities for measuring the mechanical properties at nanoscale. In this talk, after briefly reviewing the underlying theory, I will present some studies on different materials of fundamental and technological interest, such as SiO2-HfO2 glass-ceramics, colloidal aggregates of polymeric submicron particles and electret single nanoparticles.
