Relativistic thermally averaged reaction rates
abstract
We discuss the theory of reaction rates in a relativistic classical gas in analogy with the nonrelativistic case. We first clarify the relation between the invariant relativistic relative velocity, the Moller velocity and non-relativistic relative velocity and their role in the formulation of the invariant cross section and reaction rate. We derive the thermal probability distribution for the relativistic relative velocity, and find an exact formula for the mean value. We apply these results to the calculation of the relic density of
Weakly Interacting Massive Particles that are candidates for density of cold Dark Matter.
